*spoilers*
haha, the whole world is discussing abt whether lelouch is dead or alive.
spur me on to evaluate it myself too :D
so as a ihc/econs student, im supposed to give 2 sided answer and evaluate and make a stand.
Essay Question (25 marks)
Background:
In the last episode(25th) of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, 99th emperor of the Holy Empire of Britannia, CEO of the Black Knights, Second highest seating officer of the United Federation of Nations(U.F.N.), Lelouch vi Britannia (also known as Lelouch Lamperouge) was stabbed dead by Zero, disguised by Kururugi Suzaku, as part of the plan of Zero Requiem.
Zero Requiem is a plan devised by Lelouch to direct all hatred of the world onto himself, so his death will serve to facilitate peace for the world.
1) Is Lelouch dead? Evaluate. [25]
Regarding this point, i believe that Lelouch is not dead to a certain extent.
Firstly, the last episode ends of with a scene where C.C was talking to "herself". She says, "The power of Geass brings loneliness…that’s not quite right is it, Lelouch?", whlie nodding her head to the direction of the cart driver. Thus, it will be logical to conclude that the cart driver is Lelouch, who is still alive and travelling the world with C.C. However, how did he survived the stab from Suzaku?
Secondly, the reason why Lelouch is able to stay alive from the stab, may be due to the fact that he inherited The Code from his Father, Charles di Britannia. In the World of C, Lelouch was being strangled by Charles, while he is disappearing, with his right hand. The right hand was the hand that bear The Code. The Code might have been passed on to Lelouch, who hold a fully evolved Geass (2 eyes). So, The Code was activated when Lelouch was stabbed by Suzaku and he "die". This can be proven by the inference that The Code normally activates itself after the possessor's death, as can be seen from the revival of Charles with V.V's Code and revival of C.C with the nun's Code. Thus, it can be explained that Lelouch survived the stab of Suzaku due to The Code. However, how can we be sure that he possess The Code?
Thirdly, I can easily deduced that Lelouch possess The Code when Lelouch's memories was transfered to Nunnally vi Britannia when she touched his hand. This is similar to what happened when Lelouch touched C.C, when her memories flow into him. Thus it can be deduced that The Code possessors are uncontrolled telepaths and only The Code possessors can transfer their memories to another person. And maybe thats why the anime series is called "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2", where Lelouch possess both The Code and the Geass.
Fourthly, Jermiah Gottwald(also known as Orange) was seen smiling when Zero jumped on his back to stabbed Lelouch. He let Suzaku passed, knowing of the Zero Requeim. He was also seen smiling and contended at the future at the orange plantation, after Lelouch was "dead". However, Orange, being such a loyal subordinate of Lelouch, would not possibly let Lelouch get himself killed. Thus he would only allow the Zero Requiem to carry on, only when Lelouch appeared to be "killed". Thus, its safe to assume that Lelouch only appeared to be "dead" infront of the public, while in actual fact is alive and kicking.
(additional two reasons my brother though of :D)
Fifthly, Orange was seen to call for a retreat quickly after Lelouch is "dead". He may then be able to pick up Lelouch's body and bring him to somewhere safe. His high speed movement while carrying a body can be seen when Orange saved Cornelia li Britannia from a blast.
Sixthly, most characters of this anime series do not die so easily, as can be seen from Cornelia surviving from the shot from the back by Schneizel el Britannia, Gilbert G.P. Guilford and Sayoko Shinozaki surviving from the FLEIJA attack.
(lol, another point i suddenly thought of, but dun noe correct ornot)
Seventhly, a crane was seen on the cart of hay beside of C.C. From the first season, it was depicted that C.C do not know how to fold a crane and only Nunnally, Lelouch and Sayoko know how to fold it. Thus, i can deduce that C.C is actually talking to Lelouch who is alive and driving the cart. Also, the crane is the symbol of longetivity in Japan, thus it might refer to Lelouch surviving the stab.
On the other hand, i agree that Lelouch is dead to a certain extent.
Firstly, C.C was looking at the sky and talking and not towards the cart driver. C.C may be talking to dead, as people will tend to talk to the dead loved ones after their death, in remembrance. She may also be talking to the spirit of Lelouch in the World of C, which can be seen that Charles was talking to Clovis la Britannia in Season 1. Thus, we cannot conclude that the cart driver is Lelouch in disguise.
Secondly, there was no sure evidence that Lelouch got his father's Code. Also, there is no reason for Charles to pass on The Code to Lelouch.
Thirdly, Lelouch do not possess The Code as if he possesses it, he would be revived quickly, like Charles and C.C. However, he die slowly, in arms of Nunnaly. Also, the bottom of Lelouch's eyes were blackened and this can be seen from other dead characters from the anime, namely Euphemia li Brittania, Shirley Fenette and Rolo Lamperouge.
Fourthly, and what I think is the most crucial, is the fact that Suzaku and C.C was crying when Lelouch was killed. They were crying for Lelouch. It was all part of a plan to have him killed, and save the world. The reason why Orange was still smiling was that he do not know of the full plan that Lelouch will be killed and was make to think that Lelouch will survive, so that the plan can still carry on. Also, Orange had see the need for Lelouch to die, and decided to see the end of his master with his strong code of honour. He may have swear loyalty to Nunnally after Lelouch's death, so to continue what his master had always been doing.
Personally, I believe Lelouch to be dead. Seriously, he is dead, just accept it. Code Geass R2 ended, and Lelouch sacrifice himself as a hero to save the world, while the world continue to hate him and blame him. Thats why Lelouch is a such a good guy.
In conclusion, I can infer that Lelouch is still alive. This is because there is still no other explanation why memories of Lelouch flow into Nunnally when she touched his hand other than the fact that Lelouch is a Code Bearer. Thus, Lelouch may be alive, and he is highly the cart driver and they are on their way to live happily ever after. There will also be a probability of a OVA or a movie being made from this anime if Lelouch is still alive and thus to reap in more profits, Sunrise and other companies will make him stay alive.
By the way, we can see that Lelouch's true love is still Shirley as she is the first image to be displayed in the memories of Lelouch when he is dying. :D
